other/interviews Talking with the biggest Dutch Spotify curator 'Jesper Hesseling'

You're a Spotify curator, what does that mean exactly?

A playlist curator compiles playlists. There is a lot to look at. From hundreds of tracks, you have to choose which ones are good enough to get into the playlist. Also, it has to suit the listeners of my playlist. And it is important to be up-to-date about the latest tracks.

How did you get in touch with Spotify and creating playlists?

I have been working with music all my life. I was a DJ from the beginning. I also listened to radio and recorded the best tracks on a cassette tape. Every weekend I was in the record shop to pick up the top 40 newspaper. When Spotify came I got quick access to all the music and I could easily compose lists. I first did this purely for myself, but at one point I saw that more and more people were going to follow me. Currently, I have 80,000 followers!

Tell us something about your playlist ‘Monthly hits’.

My playlist ‘Monthly Hits’ exists for a large portion of mainstream hits. The list also contains many new talents and tracks which have not been discovered yet but have a lot of potentials. The most common genres are pop, rap, and EDM.

In terms of goals, targets etc. what is the biggest achievement you’ve had in your career so far?

I have experienced a lot of cool things, thanks to my playlist. Besides playlist curator, I’m also a teacher at a primary school in The Netherlands. Together with my class we were invited by Armada Music and received a DJ workshop by Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. Other highlights include my meetings with Martin Garrix (during my trip to Ibiza along with Justin Mylo) Ingrosso, Armin van Buuren and Afrojack. I got goosebumps when I was on stage with Lucas & Steve at the Flying Dutch and with Kris Kross Amsterdam in the Ziggo Dome. I was honoured to speak at ADE and the BUMA NL AWARDS.
